Trailer fun

So, this past Sunday was the day for me to take Tesla to a trainer for the month while I am totally absorbed with getting the rest of us moved into our new house...

Knowing I had a difficult loader, I had it all planned out!
Arrive at 9, hook up, load my stuff, load Tesla ~10am once my helper arrived, with the intent to be on the road around 1030...to the trainer around lunch, home before kids were up from nap.

So what's the saying...  Life is what happens when you are busy making plans?  Murphy's Law - something WILL go wrong?  and it did...

Cold weather Saturday night = my helper's heat dying thus she had to stay home and get that resolved and couldn't meet me at 10.
Ok, plan B.  Try walk two not so horse savy people through how to help you load a difficult horse.

2+ hours of "almost on" failures, resulted in this look from Tesla

I tried a variety of things...that picture being the last attempts with the divider pulled out to make a box stall and me sitting on the floor the opposite end at my escape door.  His playful and curious nature he almost got on several times, only to have a panic moment and go flying backwards and up.  During this battle of wills I had texted my helper that we were STILL trying to load. Heat now fixed, she came to my rescue and had him on in 10min ... Old school method I had almost gone the route of myself, but had never done before, only seen it done; using the trailer as a leverage point so that he couldn't keep knocking people off their feet and pulling back.

So when did I hit the road finally? about 1pm.... The trip itself was uneventful. Other than the first few minutes of sitting waiting for me to drive off, he was quiet.  We only had an hour drive, so it wasn't a big deal to be leaving that much later in terms of daylight.  When we got there he walked off, fairly ungracefully stepping out of the trailer, no worse for wear and right to the grass of his pasture to munch.  He quickly came over to say hi to me & the trainer as he a bit of a puppy dog :) All is forgiven?  Loading is one of the big items to be worked on! My trailer is put back together as a 2H straight load with a divider and left with him.

We did some paperwork and gave him a pasture mate.  2 seconds of someone squealing at the other and then they were off munching together.  He is a very easy going gelding and seems to adjust to other horses easily.  He is the "annoying little brother" of the pasture who isn't afraid of the alphas and has the "love/hate bites" to prove it!

So, I'm horseless until Valentines day... But, it will be a good present for myself to go ride and pick him up :)

Happy "Birthday" in heaven

Happy Birthday Traveler <3
On this day in 2008 I brought you home to our barn in Michigan and set this as your birthdate in1998 based on the vet's guess on your age.

First day home

Oh I how I miss this face

I miss you and love you so much! We had such a great bond working through so much over the years.  Run free over the rainbow bride until we meet again.

Happy New Year

Hello 2015!
Started it out on the right foot, on horseback! My second ride of the long winter break...kinda stinks I didn't get to ride more, but we've had a lot to do to get our new house ready for us to move in end of Jan!

So today we got picked up by a friend, who has a slant load trailer and 2 other horses loaded.  Tesla objected significantly once to getting on, and then went on much easier than he had in my trailer. We were also able to back him off a bit easier. He'd rather turn and come off, but we'll keep working on the back up!  I guess when I can finally upgrade my trailer we will be better with a slant!

Tesla was a good boy overall. Only our 2nd ride off the farm and I think 5th together since buying him?!  We need to find the right bit for us, but otherwise our tack is good :) Need to eventually get a crupper for our mountain riding, but right now around the area it isn't needed.

We had some good Greenie experiences today!  Going out behind a large group - waiting nicely at the trailer for our buddy, not race brain "lets go get em".  We went out with just one other friend - through some very windy trees and along side cows, with other horses in the distance and in no rush to catch them.  We went back to the parking area to pick up a map and head out on the 'real ride' and ended up having a pony cart behind us.  We stopped to face it but Tesla was worried enough backing up at high speeds that I just decided it best to get off and keep him still as they passed.  2 cute little Dartmoor ponies pulling a cart with jingle bells.  We then proceeded to hit the trail and chase said pony cart and check it out.  We went past them just fine and put enough space between us at a trot (or some gait) to ease his & his buddy Stryder's mind to continue on :)

I know Tesla can trot...we have trotted, and did on this ride...but he did this gait that I haven't experienced moving away from those ponies - very fast moving but smooth, can't post it, so I sat with it. lol.  I guess we'll see how that plays out in the future!

We had a good first canter too :) I over think it in the arena so it is easier for me on the trails.  A few little arguments about where we going and a random buck, but other than not wanting to walk much he did really well.  We enjoyed ourselves and despite the complete fuzzbucket he is, he really only had sweat under his girth and some barely noticeable under the saddle unlike a bunch of other soaked horses at the ride.

It was a bit chilly today, and he was a little harder to keep a walking pace so I only got pictures when stopped for a break and hear about the history of this cool little church.

Tesla and his new buddy Stryder enjoying some mutual face scratches.

My friend Amanda grabbed shot of us as we approached the church

So I won't be posting much about him for the next few weeks... With all the time we need to work on the house I'm going to bring Tesla to a friend to work with him while I can't.  I don't feel comfortable letting a green horse sit, let alone a new horse to me!  If it was Traveler I know he could go for months with little work and be just the same guy when started up again.  After a few weeks I'll bring him back this direction and he'll move over to Amanda's place with Stryder. She is much closer to our new house than the current barn and we plan to train together for the 2015 season :)  I can't wait till the evenings are light again and I can get out after work once a week and ride on the weekends!

Happy New Year all! Ride on! :)
