Saturday ride reflection

Got out to ride today with part of our training gang at a local trail.  Majority of the 5 of us haven't been on our horses much (some at all) the last few months.

Amanda and I had our greenies out, and they showed their green color!

Tesla and I are still getting to know each other.  We had some rough moments, mostly over speed of travel. I bailed twice...once after a big spook due to him hitting a tree branch and me telling him to move over at the same time due to said branch resulted in me gracefully bailing off to the side while he calmed down.
The next issue was over me engaging the bit resulting in a head toss and body twist and buck to which self preservation said 'just get off and regroup!' So, I did.  I sat a few more bucks, and promptly have ordered the recommended Myler bit for him.  I will be trying him out in the S-hack too, but slowly and in a controlled manner before hitting that trails that way.  I know a bit won't solve everything, but I think the correct communication link will greatly help us.

Aside from that, I came home to find our new girth! I'm going to give that a try, and maybe some padding changes to see my Bandos is really the right saddle for us... gosh I dread being on a saddle hunt! Fingers crossed we get it working for us!!

Tesla had a trim this week and we did his measurements for boots.  I plan to order some Renegade Vipers in April for us on the 'boots or shoes required' rides.

As much as I love Tesla already, I miss my Traveler.  I know things will come to us in time, but I miss my steady guy and knowing what to expect. We worked hard to get to where we did, and I am truly grateful he passed doing what he loved - being out on the trails.

So this week brought on lots of decisions/changes for me. Last weekend I sold my 2H BP to upgrade for camping this year. I found another trailer, but waiting to make sure everything is in working order before finalizing and offer. I've seen it, but it hadn't been de-winterized yet so that is next on the list.

I also decided to scratch going to Leatherwood at the end of the month.  Tesla and I just have not had enough riding time together. We are still working our way through finding a bit that works on trails for us too.  I'm too chicken to try a s-hack yet :P but soon we will give it shot around the arena then out on trail.

So today instead of a longer conditioning ride I drug Amanda away from her work to get her greenie Stryder out with us.   Did not go as planned!  I brought Tesla in who was severely agitated by the wind but settled down and we got through grooming... Yay for spring shedding!  Went to put the saddle on and had quite a bit of trouble standing still. So rather than be squashed into a wall, I took him out into the arena and let him work out his wiggles.  He is a very pretty mover!  I waited in the middle of the arena while he ran himself silly...saw a very pretty floaty trot, slides into the fence line, Arab head tosses and snorts :)  Took about 5min or so then he came trotting up to me and stopped.  Lunged him a few circles to make sure we were on the same page now and went back in to put the saddle on.

Amanda and I were a little worried we might not make it past ground work today, but she lunged Stryder and then we rode them in the arena a few minutes.  All was well and they settled down so we headed out on the trails.  They both did well even with all the crazy wind around us. In the woods it wasn't as bad, but through the open fields it was impossible to hear anything but the whistling in my helmet!   So today was mostly about walking and mental work with a little trotting in the woods.  Despite how we started out, it was a good training day in the end!

No pictures today, needed to be at the ready for any issues (which we didn't have). More reasons I need to get a go-pro/or type camera!

Finally! a ride

We got enough ice off the ground to deal with the slush and mud for a slow ride today at the barn.
I accidentally left it running in my jacket pocket while we were feeding and putting hay out, so the time duration is off, but the distance is right.  Slow start back but any riding is a bonus after such a crappy weather month!

Lots of new stuff for Tesla today - tried a new bit, which he was much happier about, put my rein-safe and a rein-extender/popper that I made, and a saddle bag to try out.  Oh, after our ride I put a crupper on him and trotted him around the arena (on the ground). No bucks so hoping under saddle usage goes just as well!

Overall a good ride.  We've got things to learn together, like crossing muddy creeks and listening/rating in open fields but all considering the things we did, he did great with no mental melt downs :)  I'm looking forward to trying a hack, as he really does great in the arena in just a halter, just not sure I'm ready to jump in to trails like that.

Winter blues

I picked up Tesla on Valentines day as planned :)
It was 40degrees out, but the wind was so bad it was near zero 'feel'.  We did an 1.5hr of riding lessons together; she gave me tips on how his mind works - Playful and willing Left Brained Extrovert.
We rode in just a halter, and despite all the crazy wind, he was pretty calm. I now have to "relearn" as he is more one-handed direction than 2 :)

And then it became time to load up and show me how well he doing with my trailer.  He hopped right on for his grain, came in and out as he ate while we chatted.  All was great UNTIL we decided to close the door.  We then spent the next 1.5+hr working to get him back to the level he was comfortable getting on again.  The trainer was great, walking me through how to work him and help him understand... In the end, we had to remove the divider again as he would walk up then stick his head over to the other side so not gettingon fully - and then he was on in 2min flat.  Our trip to the new barn was uneventful but slow as I had to come back over the mountain in the wind.  He came off the trailer great, we walked the fences with his new pasture mate (a QH mare) and then brought everyone in for the night due to the nasty weather coming again.

He's settled in well, making himself the boss regardless of it is just those two or a 3rd joins the crowd and being a good boy with manners for the barn owner.

Unfortunately, I haven't ridden since :(  Every Thursday eve that I have set aside for riding and every weekend so far has been bad weather or bad footing remaining... We did get out for a little hand walking once!

Bye mom!
So, I have the winter blues!  I have plans to do the LD at Leatherwood on March 28. Entry and deposit sent in, but we need a good longer training ride before hand!  So here I am writing out my frustrations amid an impending snow/sleet storm expected tomorrow and thus ruining chances of a conditioning ride this weekend!
Hoping for some relief and horse therapy soon!
